of the Maikal Hills, 18kms from the District Headquarters of Kawardha in NW Chattisgarh, halfway between Raipur and Kanha National Park, Bhoramdeo Jungle Retreat offers an ideal base from which to explore tribal Gond and Baiga villages under the guidance of expert Kawardha-born owner-operator Satyendra 'Sunny' Upadhyay.

BJR offers farmhouse-style living with essential mod cons, and most of all the unusual chance to experience life (and wildlife) at Central Indian village level.

Trekking into the beautiful Maikal Hills and visits to Gond and Baiga markets and villages are regular BJR activities.

For the less energetic, transport (with AC) can also be arranged, or you can simply relax at the BJR farmhouse, watch for birds, and soak in the delightful views.

BJR also hosts tribal friends at the farmhouse who will bring their music and dance to your doorstep. Together with good food, working bathrooms and the best local knowledge, BJR adds up to a rare experience in today's world.

Sunny Upadhyay is a native of District Kawardha and is devoted to the unique tribal peoples of his homeland. In his company you will be able to meet villagers and forest people without the least formality or embarrassment - whether at colourful weekly markets or in their own homes where they are quite likely to throw an impromptu party in your (and Sunny's) honour. Sunny works hard for the benefit of local people, and his guided tours are always conducted with their welfare first and foremost in mind.

Bhoramdeo Jungle Retreat currently offers five double bedrooms in its twin farmhouses. All have basic western-style bathroom facilities. Simplicity is the key, keeping traditional domestic values in harmony with essential mod cons.BJR Mod Cons

Local cooks provide a high standard of country food; menus can be adapted to individual tastes. All meals and hot beverages are included in the tariff, except optional drinks which can be ordered. Lunch will often be a picnic in the forest or shared in a tribal village.

First-class air-conditioned transport is available for transfers to and from Raipur and Kanha National Park as well as for those less keen on trekking. Bear in mind that nights in December and January can be quite cold. Fires are lit, but bring some warm clothes too. BJR is normally closed in May-June when things get too hot for comfort.
